India has said no to a recent co-operation proposal put forward by US in initiating punitive measures against terrorist organization Lashkar-e-toiba (LeT). India’s rejection has bemused many people in diplomatic circles as Lashkar-e-Toiba is a potential threat to India’s security and integrity.
For long, India has considered the critical aspect of counter-terrorism operations as a bilateral issue that can be commenced thoroughly by India and Pakistan only. But not only this, there are many reasons that might have prompted the country’s rejection of America’s Offer. Firstly, harsh memoirs that India experienced in nineteenth century. America contemplated this proposal as it was of the view that via this measure India would be able to overlook the history and move ahead.
The second reason that is being put forward by the sources behind India’s move is that the way in which United States is perceived by the Muslim population in India and its acceptance might boomerang on its national interests. Learning from its past experience of US acts of counter-intelligence has somewhat forced India to step back. Feebly salaried Indian intelligence officials become easy targets that can be used as an undercover agent in the Indian government.
Both of the countries recognizes the importance of mutual support in eliminating terrorism but for the moment emphasis will be given on the exchange of vital information.
Moreover, India needs to augments the capabilities of its intelligence network in interception of modern code tactics used by terrorists and for that up to date training must be given to its officials so that they become proficient in cracking the terrorists’ communication.
